Earthquakes can be scary, and if you are not properly prepared, they could be deadly too. The one thing that you will need to think about if you live near a fault line or even in a place where you can get an earthquake only every fifty years, you will want to be prepared with earthquake survival kits. These kits can be tailored to earthquake survival, or they can be overall helpful in any natural disaster.
Earthquake preparedness is the best way to stay safe in any event. There is a very high chance (more than 67%) that Los Angeles will be hit with a major earthquake sometime in the next thirty years. This means that officials throughout the city and county are looking to residents to become more aware of what they need to do in order to be prepared for the next earthquake. This means that every home should have one or more earthquake kits put together.
Along with the kit, a family must have a disaster plan put in place. This is the way that you will all communicate when it comes to a natural disaster. If one or more family members are not home at the time, there should be a designated meeting place if everyone can get there safely. And then there is the emergency kit. What should go in it?
There are a lot of items that can be useful in a natural disaster, but the top ten essential items that an earthquake survival kit must have are: water, food, cash/important documents, clothes, flashlight, first aid kit, medicine, radio, toiletries, and tools. Food and water are the most important because you want to have something with you in case it can take awhile before you get access to other sources of food or water. You will also need cash because if you still have to end up buying something at a store after the earthquake, many electronic systems, including those that work for credit cards, will probably be down.
Flashlights, first aid kits, and any specific medication for anyone in the family is an essential part of this kit as well because someone could need injury care. If you have only a slight injury, it is best to take care of it yourself and follow up with a doctor to free up emergency resources for those who could be worse off.
Having a radio is vital to be able to hear what is going on and if there are any instructions from officials as to where to go. Make sure the radio can work without electricity. If it runs on batteries, you will want to make sure to have fresh batteries at all times in the kit as well.
An emergency survival kit can work for earthquakes, floods, and other disasters. But thinking about it will not do anything for your or your family. If disaster strikes today, will you be ready?

The City of Los Angeles, situated on the nation’s West Coast, surrounded by the San Bernardino Mountain Range, is the largest city in California. The city has undergone a major transformation since it was established in 1781 by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. Building and construction has proceeded at a somewhat haphazard pace over the years. LA’s downtown, in particular, is currently undergoing something of a renaissance, with many historic buildings being converted into expensive lofts.
The majority of major downtown department stores once operated out of independent buildings in the area. Many were closed in the 1970’s and 80’s, as there was a movement away from stand-alones and into modern office parks and shopping complexes. With the city’s westward shift of the commercial center, downtown LA was lacking much nightlife until more recent times.
Despite the fact that the building and construction process proceeded relatively quickly, the LA City Council sped things up by enacting a reuse ordinance, thus making it simpler for developers to convert vacant old office buildings to high-class lofts and exclusive apartment complexes. A slew of professionals, fed up with the city’s notorious rush-hour gridlock problems, were quick to move in.
The number of residents in downtown LA has blossomed since the early 2000′s, in part due to all the building and construction, with a greater than 15 percent increase to approximately 28,000 persons. This amount surpassed estimates and, with a higher number of housing units being built, has pushed the total count to potentially be more than 40,000 by the end of 2008. However, the number of available jobs in the area has fallen to 418,000, down from an estimated 605,000 a decade ago.
In 2007, the City Council approved major changes to the downtown’s zoning rules. Muchly desired by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the changes facilitate more building and construction by allowing bigger and more closely-packed developments. In addition, builders who withhold 15 percent of their units for low-income residents are not governed by certain code requirements and living spaces can be constructed that are over 30 percent larger than current zoning laws call for.
Interestingly, a number of the core downtown buildings were built way back in the turn of the century. Between then and the late 1050’s, a rigid zoning law kept building heights at under 150 feet, causing a fairly homogenous skyline. Reportedly, it was done not for fear of earthquakes, but to maintain a uniform height in the area and to avoid New York City style congestion. None of these laws are in effect today, as a skyline filled with tall office buildings bears evidence to.

On Monday, City of Los Angeles Controller Laura Chick said her just completed audit of the city’s preparedness for large-scale emergencies and health crises “cries out for a coordinated, constantly up-dated, state of the art strategic plan.”
“I want the public to know that the City of Los Angeles is not as well-prepared for a widespread disaster as we need to be and as we can be,” she stated.
Surveys by emergency preparedness officials of several other large cities found they have concerns about some of the same issues that Los Angeles faces. These officials said they will be studying the Los Angeles audit to ascertain what recommendations and actions might be applicable to their own cities and surrounding communities.
These findings support for the need of individuals in our country and throughout the world, to prepare for natural and man-made disasters. There is both historical and now recent proof that our government is not ready to rush to our aid. Should a 7.8 earthquake hit along the San Andres or New Madrid faults or should another category 4 or 5 hurricane hit one of our coastal cities there will not be immediate life-saving support. Unless you prepare for such events yourself you risk pain, suffering and possibly death. We must all help ourselves first and then reach out to help our friends and neighbors to help and support them.
The question of how to prepare is on many people’s minds. But how to prepare is not very clear. Yes there are lists and lists that you can find with suggested supplies. Yes it is possible to go from store to store and get food and water as well as the other goods. However, it becomes a chore that according to statistics most Americans are not doing. Only 27-32% of American households are ready for such disasters.

&ldquoAt Survival Kits Online our knowledgeable staff is able to assist while educating the customer&rdquo says company partner Chad Allen. &ldquoThrough our extensive research we are able disseminate information to our customers and help make sense of it all&rdquo.

Twitter Terrorism?
Micro-blogging is IN and it just might do US IN! Micro-blogging is a form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates (usually 140 characters) and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, email, MP3 or the web. Do you TWEET?
A recent draft by the US Army intelligence report has identified the popular micro-blogging service Twitter, Global Positioning System maps and voice-changing software as potential terrorist tools. The report by the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion, posted on the website of the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), examines a number of mobile and web technologies and their potential uses by militants.
The posting of the report on the FAS site was reported Friday by Wired magazine contributing editor Noah Shachtman on his national security blog “Danger Room” at wired.com. The report is not based on clandestine reporting but drawn from open source intelligence known as OSINT.
A chapter on “Potential for Terrorist Use of Twitter” notes that Twitter members sent out messages, known as “Tweets,” reporting the July Los Angeles earthquake faster than news outlets and activists at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis used it to provide information on police movements. “Twitter has also become a social activism tool for socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political enthusiasts, hacktivists and others to communicate with each other and to send messages to broader audiences,” the report said.
But don’t worry, unless John McCain is our next president as he doesn’t even own a computer, and doesn’t email, let alone “tweet”.
“Extremist and terrorist use of Twitter could evolve over time to reflect tactics that are already evolving in use by hacktivists and activists for surveillance,” it said. “This could theoretically be combined with targeting.” The report outlined scenarios in which militants could make use of Twitter, combined with such programs as Google Maps or cell phone pictures or video, to carry out an ambush or detonate explosives.
And we thought modern technology was on our side!

If you are living in Sherman Oaks, or anywhere in the San Fernando Valley for that matter, your home is probably more than thirty years old. This means that your plumbing system is old and out of date, and having copper repipes installed may be exactly what you need to update your entire system. Homes built in this part of the country were piped with iron or galvanized pipes, which means they had a zinc coating. Over time the zinc breaks down, leading to rusty pipes.
Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles. There are mostly older and historic homes in this area and they will need to have copper repipe installed as soon as the smallest plumbing problem is noted. This area was also adversely affected by the earthquake in 1994, and many of the homes here were either completely destroyed or seriously damaged. When the rebuilding process began the following year the plumbing systems were ignored for the most part because of a lack of funding and the difficulties with insurance claims to cover this part of the damage.
It is usually easy to tell when you are ready for a copper repipe installation. Your water pressure may have dropped dramatically, or you may have found a leak in your pipes. The best thing to do is to call your plumber and get started with the repiping process immediately. Many people attempt to do a copper repipe job themselves, only to find they are not equipped to do this themselves and must call in a professional plumbing company.
The cleaning of the fittings and the pipes is the most important step. A flux paste is typically used. This is an acid that cleans the copper and makes it able to be soldered. You also need to make sure that the hot and cold water are connected to the correct pipes.
Keeping your home’s plumbing system is top condition is essential to the overall maintenance and value of your home or commercial building. Sometimes we take our plumbing for granted, but once something goes wrong, like a leaking or broken pipe, we understand the importance of the proper care and maintenance of this vital water system.
Whether you live in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, or the San Fernando Valley, keeping your home’s plumbing system in top condition is important to your peace of mind as well as to the overall value of your property.

Online Bingo Operators are not like any kind of gambling operator. So read this to find out important information for online bingo operators.
Bingo may seem to be a form of gambling. However, governments don’t really see bingo as one. What more the form of bingo online? As to where bingo was born, we can’t really tell which one is the very first country to discover the game. Some say it originated in Spain while some say it started in Italy. Others say the United States was the first country to discover it although it was called Bean-O during the 1930s. But whichever country it all started, one thing is for sure. Bingo has provided a great, wholesome, and fun way to raise money for the country, government, or organization holding the bingo event.
For many years, bingo remains to be a popular game. So when the Internet or the World Wide Web was discovered, it only took a couple of years before online bingo was born. Internet games were a great way to play with several other players from all over the world. It has eliminated the barriers of geography. Thus, a lot of people play online bingo. Let’s get into operating online bingo in more detail.
As we have previously mentioned, bingo is not your usual gambling game, and so is online bingo. Bing online is not regulated by the government. However, when large prizes are in store, then that’s when government laws come in. Like any legitimate gambling games, the government takes percentage or fees from the bingo operators providing large prizes. As for the US government, laws and regulations differ in each state. Thus, it would be best to focus on one state as for the moment. Let’s take a look at how online bingo is being regulated in the state of Texas as an example.
Bingo operators, including online operators like Foxy Bingo, are being managed by a certain commission assigned by the state, in this example, the State of Texas. Such a commission is managed by a director. Other roles in the commission include an assistant director as well as a bingo administrator or technician. There are also sections in which the commission is divided. There’s the auditing department, accounting, and the licensing. Aside from that, these commissions include committees too. The members of the committee are representatives of the various types of bingo played in the state. That includes online bingo and those offline. So what exactly is the purpose of such commissions and committees? They manage and govern the bingo operations in the state. Some regulate bingo operators on certain limitations about prize money. Some regulate operators on where they hold their games. So whatever state or country you are in, make sure that you join a bingo game that follows the rules on online bingo for that location.
West Hills, CA After a 5.4 earthquake struck the Los Angeles vicinity today Survival Kits Online a Southern California emergency disaster preparedness store, saw a drastic spike in customer sales to their retail store and internet site with people searching for earthquake kits.
“We really hope this wake up call is not short lived” said owner/partner Chad Allen. “There was an increase in concerned, shook-up people at our store as well as our online store www.survivalkitsonline.com today. Often times people forget about being prepared all too soon and this earthquake should shake them into reality and make people aware that it is not a question of if the ‘big one’ will hit, but when.”
The magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook the Los Angeles metropolitan area Tuesday, leaving residents nervous but causing no serious damage or injuries. It struck at about 11:42 a.m., according to the USGS, the United States Geological Survey. Its epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar. More than 30 aftershocks were recorded with the largest of those being a magnitude 3.6.
This shaker served as a warning to southern Californians to get prepared now with survival kits and supplies before the catastrophic one hits.
In an effort to explain to people that earthquakes are to be taken seriously and what is yet to come, Kate Hutton, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology, said, “This is a sample, a small sample”.
“This is somewhere between small and moderate.” She said, “There is a 5 percent chance this quake could be a precursor to a larger earthquake. After 24 hours, that chance will drop to 1 percent.”
“Every earthquake relieves some stress,” Hutton said. “It’s usually only a drop in the ocean. In other words, the amount of stress released by this earthquake is minuscule compared to the amount that’s built up and is building up for the Big One when it happens some day in the future.”
A 5.4 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be “moderate,” which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures.
The last moderate quake to strike California was a magnitude 5.4 in April 2008 in the northern part of the state. However, the last major quake to be centered in a heavily populate area was the Northridge Quake of 1994 measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale and causing 72 deaths and approximately 28 Billion dollars in damage.
According to the results of a study published in Science Daily in April, the California Geological Survey and the Southern California Earthquake Center stated that in the next 30 years, there is a 46 percent chance of California experiencing a quake of magnitude 7.5 or larger and a 99 percent chance for an magnitude 6.7 or larger.
“This earthquake reminds us to be prepared,” said California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. “We were very fortunate that there were no serious injuries or property damage.”
Despite the absence of serious damage or injuries, some Los Angeles area residents were left rattled. The quake was felt as far south as San Diego, California. The USGS said it received reports of light shaking as far north as Rosamond, California, about 55 miles north-northeast of Los Angeles and as far east as Las Vegas.
“We want people to do everything they can to be prepared”, said owner/partner Scott Kastner. “This is why I got into the Emergency Disaster Business and started SurvivalKitsOnline.com in the first place. After being 3 blocks from the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge Quake, and experiencing its force, I don’t want anyone to be unprepared.”
