Condominiums have made homeownership affordable for many people. Earthquake Insurance:

Approximately half of all condominium andtownhouse buildings on the Westside have earthquake insurance included in the homeowner’s dues.

Pros:

This protects the owners from having to come up with funds to payfor repairs, should an earthquake occur. Price of construction per square foot in Santa Monica, Brentwood and other Westside neighborhoods can be anywhere from $150-300. This makes a complete rebuild on a 1000sf condo at the very least $150,000 up to $300,000. Cons:

Earthquake insurance can be very costly. Premiums tend to besignificantly higher for buildings that are looking for new coverageas opposed to buildings who signed on for coverage 20 years ago. The deductibles can be upwards of $250 -500,000, much higher thanwhat most buildings in Santa Monica suffered during the NorthridgeEarthquake in 1994. Personal Assessment Insurance can be had for a maximum of $50,000per condominium. You would be covered in an instance where your 10unit condo building had $500,000 worth of damage.

The federal government often supplies subsidized loans at very lowinterest rates for disaster victims.Many buildings in Santa Monica had to go through years of courtaction before their insurance providers would give them the financialassistance that was owed to them

Amenities:

Many people enjoy the idea of amenities such as pools, sauna, 24hour guard gated access. For many residents of these buildings theseamenities never become truly valuable. There are thousands ofresidents of local condo buildings who use the building pool aboutonce a year. Additionally, in Santa Monica and Brentwood there aremany local gyms that do a better job of motivating you. So, if you aregoing to buy in a building with amenities, and therefore higherhomeowners dues and purchase prices, make sure you are going to take full advantage of them.

I should also mention that if you are looking to live in a luxurybuilding; say an ocean view condominium on Ocean Avenue, none of the above applies. You are going to have amenities whether you like them or not and enjoy using or not using every minute of them.

Reserves:

After the Homeowners Dues are collected and used to pay debits tothe different vendors the left over money is put into reserves for thebuilding. Funds from the reserves can be used in case the buildingneeds a new roof or upgrades to the hallways and common areas.

Difference between a Condo and a Co-op:

In a condominium, the owner owns the space inside the wallsindividually and the common areas collectively as part of a group. Itis a pure form of homeownership, with the same rights andresponsibilities of a single family home. A co-op is owned by acooperative that issues shares to the building and the right to occupya given unit. As the owner, you own shares in the building not thespace inside the walls. Your right to occupy a particular section ofthe building is usually issued via a lease term that renews everyfifty years or so. About 95% of the multi-unit inventory in LosAngeles (Brentwood) and Santa Monica is condos. In New York City the majority of units are co-ops. The difference between buying a condo or a co-op in Santa Monica and Los Angeles is that buyers of co-ops tend to have less financing options available to them. You also have to be “approved” by the board. Here on the Westside the boards are pretty liberal in contrast to the stories you might have heard about New York City co-op boards.

Difference between a Townhouse and a Condo:

In Santa Monica and the other neighborhoods of the Westside of LosAngeles, people refer to single story residences as condos and double or triple story residences as townhouses. These are both condominiums in the legal sense of the term.

St Patrick’s Catholic Church is a noted place of worship in Los Angeles, CA. It is located just east of downtown L.A. and is one of the oldest parishes in Los Angeles, having been established in 1903. The parish has serviced a plethora of communities over its existence. The parishioners, not able to bear the cost of rebuilding, had been attending service in the converted parish hall for the past 35 years. With an typical attendance of over 600 but a full capacity of only 400, many parishioners were forced to wait outside the door to the parish hall to attend Mass.

Through the inspiration of Bishop Stephen Blaire and others, the idea was born of constructing a church for the parish with the help of all the surrounding parishes and donors within Our Lady of the Angels Pastoral Region. Under the direction of Bishop Edward William Clark, the construction of the church commenced in April 2005 and was finished in December 2006. Dedication of St. Patrick’s Church was held March 17.

It had quite some time since the St. Patrick Parish had a permanent church. One thousand worshipers are now able to celebrate Mass in the new building. This is more than twice the previous capacity of the worship space in the parish hall. The unique capital campaign to build the new church involved contributions from the more than 70 parishes within the Our Lady of the Angels regions, as well as donations from outside donors and foundations.

According to parish statistics, the number of established households is about 1,500, with regularly-attending parishioners: at greater than 5,000. On an annual basis, over 450 baptisms are performed in the church. The number of students in weekly religious education classes is more than 700.

One of the biggest problems with discussing alternative cancer treatments is that it covers a huge amount of ground. Anything which is outside the mainstream practice(which will usually include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment) is, by definition, ‘alternative’. As such the ‘alternative’ label is often attacked broadly based on the ineffectuality or indeed harmfulness of specific treatments. For instance treating cancer by putting leeches on the skin to draw blood is not a mainstream medical response to cancer so it would be labeled as ‘alternative’ even though most alternative treatment providers would be horrified with the concept. Attacking unorthodox treatments broadly for the practices of a few extreme treatment providers is clearly not a rational response, yet it is exactly the line which has successfully kept alternative cancer treatment on the sideline for so long.

For the purpose of this article we will discuss the type of healthcare that Hippocrates was a strong supporter of and apply to it the broad label ‘alternative’. This form of alternative treatment works on a few basic fundamental ideas.

The first is the concept that the most efficient entity at healing a body is itself. The human body is a miraculous thing and even as we learn more and more about what the body does to treat disease we are still often left mystified by the how. The body will respond to a foreign organism long before medical tests discover it, and in fact this is usually how the problem is first bought to the attention of doctors. Diseases do not have ‘tiredness’ causing properties, this is the bodies natural response to an invasion - it attempts to enter a restive state where it can more effectively fight the invader.

A primary focus of alternative cancer treatment then is not the direct battle against the cancer and the tumor itself, but a strengthening of the bodies defenses and natural ability to fight disease. This is done via strengthening the immune system. Vitamin C is known to have strong immunity building properties and was shown by Linus Pauling (Two time Nobel prize winner) to be an effective cancer treatment by itself. In fact it was over thirty years ago that Pauling and his research partner Ewan Cameron MD showed that just 10 grams of Vitamin C taken intravenously each day would extend a cancer patient’s life 6 times longer than chemotherapy treatment. It is also worth noting that while Vitamin C builds up the immune system, chemotherapy breaks it down, which means that where chemotherapy is used it becomes the only defense the body has against cancer - the only way of continuing to fight the cancer is to continue chemotherapy. The clear conclusion is that Vitamin C is a more efficient treatment than Chemotherapy and has none of the debilitating side effects.

Alternative treatment providers have been able to use this type of research as a base for formulating a case by case plan to restore the bodies balance and fight cancer. The fact that it is ‘case by case’ is also another important component of alternative treatments. It has to be recognized that no two cases of cancer are going to be identical because there are two many different varying factors. The type of cancer it self is considered, the location of the cancer and the size of the tumor will all effect how the treatment is administered. The patients only physical state must be considered two and this will usually involve a detailed look at their body, diet and lifestyle. Everybodies DNA is different and some people are more likely to respond positively to some treatments.

This critical fact is often what is left out of a full assessment of alternative cancer treatments. Just because one person responds to a specific course of treatment does not mean another will get the same result. Imagine an auto repair shop. If you said to your mechanic that your car isn’t working he will not simply change the oil and give you your keys back. That may well work for some cars, but it will most definitely not work for them all. Your mechanic will ask you questions about what is wrong with the car. He will ask for the symptoms and from these discern the cause. Only then is any attempt made to ‘cure’ the car. Now compare that approach to the approach of orthodox medicine that will change the oil and water, give you a new set of tires and tune the engine. Too bad if you went in because your brakes didn’t work.

In most cases an alternative treatment is going to require some type of detoxification process. In modern society we are exposed to more harmful substances and processed foods that at any previous point in history. These toxins can dwell in our system for a long time and are often part of the cause of a disease. At the very least the body is wasting resources fighting them that could be assisting in it’s fight against cancer. The detoxification is an ongoing process, particularly if the other treatments are effectively killing cancer cells. The death of a cancer cell actually introduces more toxins to the system and in large doses these can be extremely harmful and even fatal. This is why all cancer treatments are undertaken gradually - because a treatment that killed all cancer cells immediately would release a massive toxic load into the system and put it in even more danger.

They will want to argue until they are out of breathe that the medical system is one of the finest in the world and it is constantly thriving to push back new barriers in health care. This is true. In recent years there have been huge advances in cancer surgery. There have been fantastic evolutions in the drugs we have open to us to treat cancer. There have been impressive leaps in our ability to detect cancer early. In fact the only thing that hasn′t improved is the survival rate of a person diagnosed with cancer.

This survival rate is buried under a mountain of statistics, and these statistics can be made to tell a number of different stories. For instance, when your doctor speaks of your survival chances he may well be referring to your 5-year survival chances. 5-year survival is the measured as a five year span between diagnosis and death. If you last for five years you are ‘a cancer survivor’ even if you die on the first day of the sixth year. Five years is a long time - usually enough to suck every cent out of you and your family. It is a sad but true fact that a cured patient is a customer lost to the cancer industry.

Contracting cancer is a depressing enough thing to happen without having to come across the truth of the medical industry. This is an industry that USA predicts will control 20% of the US GDP by the year 2015. It’s an industry that is built on us being sick, and more frighteningly, it’s an industry that is relying on us not to get better. And most people cannot even begin to fathom the depth of conspiracy that would be required to support such an industry and suppress treatments that can cure cancer, HIV and heart disease. The level of malice required to not just let people die, but exploit them mercilessly and encourage them down the path to death is beyond most people’s comprehension. But it is plain to see for those who are prepared to open their eyes.

Doctors in America are not permitted to treat cancer patients with alternative therapies. They are not allowed to suggest them when the patient is diagnosed, they are not allowed to suggest them as the course of chemotherapy and radiation demolishes their immune system and bleeds their families finances dry and even at the end, when they admit that orthodox medicine can do nothing else for them and they should go home and prepare to die - even then - they are not allowed to prescribe alternative therapy. If they did they would risk their job, being stripped of their license to operate and possibly even a jail term. The strict adherence to a prescribed line of treatment allows for a uniform treatment of cancer regardless of your physician. Unfortunately it also means that any research or investigations into alternatives to orthodox treatment are never explored. It limits progress in medical treatments, and it ensures all the power in the medical industry remains with a pharmaceutical monopoly.

Now all of the above is quite heavy, and probably hasn’t made you feel too much better about that initial diagnosis of cancer. But that’s not the end of the story, and it’s time you saw some light at the end of the tunnel. There are alternative treatments to chemotherapy and the orthodox line, and they can work. In fact they can work very effectively.

You would think that such good news from such a credible source would open the door to a string of other discoveries and research. It should have. But in the orthodox medical world it didn’t. Because the orthodox medical world is controlled by big drug companies who cannot patent a natural substance such as Vitamin C. And this single case, while powerful, is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is known about the success of natural treatments to cancer patients.

I want to leave you with some final figures to consider. Orthodox medicine can claim around a 40% five year cure rate for cancer, but a true cure rate of less than 5%. Alternative medicine is not without it’s problems, most caused by a lack of shared research, accessibility to information and limited options.
