Do 16 Years Of Electoral Trends Favor The Democrats In 2008?

In 2008 the Dems need to win 20 states and the District of Columbia: Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Maryland and Delaware.
Since 1992 the Dems have carried 18 of those states and D.C. They have won by an average of more than 10 points.
In 2006, 15 of those 18 states elected or re-elected Dem Senate candidates in statewide elections. In the other 3 states (Illinois, Maine, Oregon) the voters re-elected Dem governors in statewide elections.
The remaining two states are New Hampshire and Ohio.
In the case of New Hampshire: the Dems won the state in the 2004 presidential election. Second, the Dems defeated an incumbent GOP governor in 2004.
In the case of Ohio, in 2006 the Dems won two statewide elections. The first was for the Senate the second was for governor.
The Dems are going to be tough to beat in ‘08
