I like to play devil’s advocate sometimes. And heck, even the Obama campaign played the race card when it said that the Clintons (both Bill and Hillary) were a bit racist.
My question is…will OJ Simpson now serve life in prison?
Our society seems to work that way. There is some sort of synchronicity at play. Some years back, a man of colour was able to get acquitted by a jury of his peers, because he made it seem that the racist police department of Los Angeles, California framed him for a double homicide that he (says) he did not commit.
Interestingly enough, Mr. Simpson is now in jail in Nevada, having been convicted of masterminding a kidnapping and armed robbery. (Personally, I think THESE charges are more trumped-up than the original murder charges of over a decade ago.) But, the OJ Simpson dilema is not getting that much press. It’s almost as if the African-American community is saying…”That’s old news. Go ahead and send that guy to jail now. We have bigger things to celebrate; the election of the first black President!”
So, is OJ Simpson the sacrificial golden calf that people of colour are willing to ignore, so long as we can have a country led by a man of African heritage?
