Is The Mccain/palin Ticket A Sure Loser?

First Democratic Endorsement in 72 Years!

As some of you may know from my posts, I live in the Central Valley of California. The Central Valley usually votes the exact opposite of the rest of the state. The area is mostly rural, but is gradually becoming a suburb for San Francisco and Sacramento. As a result, the newspapers out here usually make Republican endorsements. Both of the last elections, my local newspaper, the Stockton Record, endorsed George Bush for president. Little did I know that Republican trend has lasted a little longer. More after the flip.
Today I opened up the Stockton Record and discovered much to my surprise they were endorsing Barack Obama. Keep in mind that this is the paper that endorsed Richard Pombo in 2006 but said he needed to change. I knew the paper had been endorsing Republican for quite a while, but I didn’t know they had been endorsing Republican for the last 72 years. In a story beneath the endorsement, the editor for the paper explains that the last Democrat the Stockton Record endorsed was FDR. And not FDR’s last election mind you, his second one. In both subsequent elections, they chose a Republican. Wendell Willkie and Thomas E. Dewey.
In discussing their rationale, they focus on McCain’s lack of judgment. In particular, his choosing Sarah Palin as a running mate and his sudden populism. They also counter criticism of Obama that he is an elitest and an “empty suit.” They even make reference to McCain not knowing how many houses he has. Criticism of McCain from a group that endorsed Bush and Pombo!
So what does this tell me? If Barack Obama has no problem for a paper that’s trended Republican since Wendell Wilkie, why should he have a problem with Reagan Democrats? Please spread the news and share the links below. If this isn’t good news I don’t know what is.

Stockton Record Endorsement: “The Choice is Clear: Obama for President”
Update [2008-9-28 15:38:0 by indiophil]: A quote from the endorsement was requested: “He offers hope. A new way of doing business. And a belief that our system of government can be made to work. He’s the clear choice.”
Update [2008-9-28 16:11:19 by indiophil]: Wow, this is my first time on the rec list. Thank you all for the recommendations! Please share these links! If one paper this staunchly Republican can change their minds this early, then there’s hope for all those other papers and all those voters out there!

Good Article, Good Question. Here is my Answer:
Yes that McCain/Palin ticket will lose, it will lose like the dolphins lost 15 games last year. Now about the second question referring to “Reagan” Democrats. It is my belief that those soft Democrats(the Steel Mill and manufactering workers) aren’t that hard for Obama to win over which he is doing in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. The term Reagan Democrat is over used, the only “Reagan” Democrats not on board yet are racists. Obama has made ever reach to them with his tax plan as well as his VP choice, Joe Biden.

Sounds like they sold out to the Bafaker Obamination – the fake-it-til-ya-make-it-junior-senator. Ouch. You really won’t like socialism there in rural California…….

  3. So you think the same people are at the paper as the 1940’s?
    Some people……http://barackobamatest.com
    Obamas incompetence is almost criminal.

Yes because I am voting for Obama-Bident ticket. Even though they will not admit it on here. There are a lot of neo-cons who are having second thought about Palin. Some want McCain to dump her. Palin is so unqualified and now she’s the butt of jokes. ~++

    Vote republican
my theory is simple…republicans destroy the country and do it in the most critically horrible way possible
this gets twisted into humor on the daily show which makes me laugh nightly at the insanity of it all
no republicans = a unfunny daily show/cobert report.
sure, the economy/status of the US might improve dramatically…but at what cost?
do we want 1 more month of palin jokes, or 8 sweet years of palin madness…ooh, imagine if McCain dies (quite possible) in office and she is commander and chief of the US Armed forces….
daily show may get its own network because of the neverending humor

  12. there is a 48% chance that Obama will will, and a 47% chance that McCain will win. That leaves approximately %5 of currently undecided who will tip the balance one way or another, and depending on what county, what state etc., it could go either way.
There is no such thing as a sure win or loss in this election.
Never get smug. Pride goeth before the fall.

You’re getting that from a article in a paper that changes staff quite regularly I assume, and just think that people will really flip over it?
Anyway, It’s in California. As long as I can remember, That’s a blue state. It makes not a difference.
