i didnt know there was a plot between african americans and gays to back each other… someone should have let the brothers know
I feel sorry for anyone who is African-American AND gay.
I get what you’re saying, that minorities should have a better understanding of each other and strive to support each other as it’s a hard world out there.
But you also have to remember a lot of the African-American community is Christian, and Christianity, although it shouldn’t condemn you for being born gay, expects you to live a celibate life. Much in the same way that single heterosexuals are expected to refrain from sex if they are unmarried, gays are supposed to resist any physical contact with other gays. The argument is ‘You can’t help being gay, but you can’t practise sodomy.’
There are more agressive Christian groups that attempt to ‘pray out the gay’, and expect those born gay to change and become ‘normal’, but it is doomed to failure in most cases. You can’t change whether or not you are gay any more than you can permenantly change the color of your eyes.
This celibacy is something of a life sentence, because at least if you’re heterosexual, you have the option of getting married one day. It is unreasonable to expect any person to live without sex all their lives, and to forgo all the joys (and difficulties) of having a loving life partner.
Marriage enshrines in law the rights of both parties to each others property and children. It has been a gross injustice for many years that loving partners, committed to each other for sometimes decades, had no rights to each others estates on death. Gay marriage, or civil partnerships, were instituted to right this wrong.
However, marriage is more than a legal contract in peoples minds. It has an association with a union that is not just legal, but of divine ordinance, and that is where a lot of Christians, even tolerant ones, draw the line. You cannot, in their minds, put a holy blessing on the act of Sodomy.
If gay rights groups want to make any progress with legalising their relationships, they must, as far as possible, avoid the use of the word ‘marriage’. Concentrate on the union being a legal contract, and use ‘partnership’, which does not have the same emotive resonance.
I hope, one day, that all gay couples will be able to legalise their unions, if that’s what they want. Just don’t call it marriage, and that day may come sooner rather than later.
African-Americans are Religious people and do not feel that Marriage is a Civil right.
I am not sure it is either.
What other country is it guaranteed? How is it a civil Right? Do you vote? Yes. Do you Ride at the front of the bus? Yes. Do you Go to school ? Yes. These are civil rights.
you really think a majority of blacks give a rats azz about anyone but themselves????
just look how they portray themselves in entertainment, sports, etc., their oversized libidos have created a “me, me, me” attitude and they could care less about anyone else’s struggle.
I don’t believe this forum was designed for “opinion”. If you truly have opinion, you should consider starting a blog, or perhaps writing to your local newspaper’s op/ed section.
