Please Help Me With U.s. History Lesson On Electoral Votes :)?

Ok I missed that day in school, and even though i copied down the notes, i still don’t get it!!!! The whole thing is about electoral votes. “Florida has 15 Representatives. California has 20 electoral votes. NY has 10 representatives. Candidate X obtains 7,000,000 votes in Florida, 8,000,000 votes in California, and 5,000,000 votes in NY. Candidate Y obtains 4,000,000 votes in Florida, 10,000,000 votes in California and 12,000,000 votes in NY. Who won the elections?” If you can help me, please show all the work or whatever so I can understand it :) Any help is appreciated.

By your formula Florida has 17 electoral votes, California 20, and New York has 12. The number of electoral votes for each state is the number of representatives plus the number of senators, as well as three for the District of Columbia.
As X won Florida, X gets 17 electoral votes; Y wins California and New York, getting a total of 32 votes. X would win.
BTW. Your numbers are quite low. California has 54 electoral votes. 270 electoral votes are needed to win the presidential election.

If I follow you it should go like this.
Florida has 15 representatives so whichever candidate gets more votes in Florida “wins” 15 “points”. California has 20 so the candidate that gets more votes in CA gets 20 “points” and so on for NY. Candidate X got 7,000,000 votes in Florida and candidate Y got 4,000,000 in Florida. So, candidate X now has 15 “points”. Candidate Y got more votes than candidate X in California and New York. 20 + 10 = 30. Candidate X has 15 “points” and candidate Y has 30 “points”. Since candidate Y got more “points” than candidate X, candidate Y won the election. I hope that helped

  3. Whoever wins the majority of a state gets ALL of that state’s electoral votes. I hope you can figure it out from there. If not, I feel bad for how poorly your school is funded.
